Art and Meditation

I have a friend who always tells me that I should meditate. She tells me it does many wondrous things.

I don't disbelieve her, but whenever I try it sometimes feels like overkill.

Most people can meditate, and I wondered why I had such an issue, and why I felt so antsy.

I think I have an answer.

When I am drawing I have to focus. I do not like having conversations, or even recording myself when I am doing serious work. Music is OK, but that is about it for input.

I think art is my meditation.

Big Sister Goes to School
I do not think of problems, solutions, people, money, or any other worldly problems--I just draw. It is rhythmic, peaceful, and time stands still.

It is a separateness from reality and a bit of a delve into magic.

This week I looked at a deck of tarot cards drawn by artist James Eads. I was shuffling and the High Priestess card fell out. The High Priestess is the card of the subconscious, where ideas and creativity are first conceived.

We need to listen to our intuition and meditate in our own way. Some go outside and say nature is their church. Some meditate. I do art. Maybe you do too.

Stay tuned. I am in the process of creating a book just for artists. We are a special breed. We should not forget that.

  1. Reading or writing would be my meditation then. It quiets the mind.

    1. It really does William. Kind of interrupts the space-time continuum. xo

  2. So true. Drawing or painting takes you away and you have something to show for it afterwards.

    1. It really does. I love that blurry, zoned out feeling. No drugs or alcohol needed! Have a great week! xo

  4. there are so many forms of meditation and I think it's a very personal and individual thing. It doesn't matter what form meditation takes. I think the idea is whatever it is that brings you to a state of calm and centering without disruption of outer noise. You picked the high priestess-eh? Powerful stuff:)

    1. I agree with you Linda. If it is art that gets us to that state we are so lucky. And yes! High Priestess picked me--she fell out of the deck as I was slowly shuffling. SO interesting. Are you a tarot lover? xo

  5. You won't believe how much I can relate to your feeling about drawing and meditation. I am 100 % the same. Every time I really start sketching, doodling or drawing - I am lost in it. In a way. I am focused and 'buried' in my (non) work. It is so good for me... In fact when I had a particularly stressful few days at work, before I go to bed at night, I doodle for 20, 30 minutes and feel very much relaxed.

    1. Ah see that is perfect. We are so lucky we have this method we love to get us to that place. I am with you too--it is (non) work. I may have to get more into the tarot and the spiritual side of things here. Talk to you soon! xo

  6. Many philosophers would agree with you on this!! Creativity of any sort is very meditative... I, like you, have found creating art and visualizing art very meditative! It's the only thing that truly give my inner thoughts a break! Especially when I apply the intuitive method! Great post, and gorgeous artwork!! The high priestess is a very powerful card!

    1. Ooo the intuitive method--I have to look that up! And everyone needs a break from the inner voices once in a while. Yes-High Priestess is trying to tell me something I am sure. Consciousness and creativity--buckle up--here we go! Have a great week Giggles! xo

  7. Your painting has so much feeling to it, the little sister watching, the lamps, the bridge.
I think many artists will understand what you mean, it is what they call being in the flow, there is no room in one's head for anything else.

  8. Thank you Sheila! Yes! The flow--that is exactly right. And time just seems to disappear. Hours and hours and then you snap out of it and wonder what happened. Have a great week! xo

  9. When I try to meditate, I tend to fall asleep!

Art is meditating, so true, and I can step into your beautiful work of art and find peace in there.

    1. Thank you Susu! I can't sleep during meditation--I am the opposite. I get hyper and jittery. I started listening to certain frequencies as I draw--it is perfect. xo

  10. Love your drawing, it is such an idyllic scene... And thanks for pointing that out to me: I always feel like I should start meditating but you're so right: painting and drawing is my meditation. It takes me away from the world and time indeed stands still. No wonder I always feel good afterwards... :-)

    1. Yes yes same here Denthe! It centers me somehow. Everyone probably has a different way to do it--we all just get stuck in the typical meditation rut! (And I am NOT saying there is anything wrong with typical meditation--just that it may not be for everyone.) Have a great week. xo

  12. Big sister goes to school is very beautiful. I like quiet while I am doing art too. I don't even have the music going. It is somewhat distracting to me.
